Als Erik unterwegs war, kaufte ich dieses Bett 2nd hand, weil es mittels eines schmaleren Seitenteil zu einem sogenannten "Juniorbett", also einem Kinderbett, umgebaut werden kann. Dass Erik so ein Kinderbett nie brauchen würde, ahnten wir damals noch nicht.I bought this crib second hand, 3 years ago, when I was expecting Erik, because it can be changed into a child´s bed by simply exchanging one of the sides with a smaller side panel. We didn´t know that Erik would never use a child´s bed back then. So I´m very happy, that I managed to save some money by drilling 8 simple holes into this crib and by this transformed it into a versatile DIY Baby bay...
Here is how to do this.
Material/Tools:
1 zum "Juniorbett" umbaubares Babybett, inkl. aller Bauteile und Werkzeuge (extra Seitenteil ist im Lieferumfang enthalten) in unserem Fall "Hermelin" von IKEA
1 convertable crib, that can also be used as a child´s bed, including all extra parts and tools that came with the bed, like the extra side panel. The pictured bed is a "Hermelin" by IKEA
Bohrmaschine + Holzbohrer in der passenden Größe für die Bohrlöcher. Nehmt entweder einen Bohrer und testet ihn an den vorhandenen Bohrlöchern des Bettes oder nehmt Schrauben und Dübel mit in einen Baumarkt und fragt dort nach dem passenden Bohrer.
Electric drill + wood drill attachment please see the drills manual or ask at a hardware store for the exact measurements you´ll need; you want to drill holes with the size same of the bed´s original holes, so I suggest you check with the bed´s screws and wooden plugs for the correct drill.
Lineal, Bleistift, Malerkrep, 1 Stück Papier ca. 10x10 cm
Ruler, pencil, painter´s tape, one piece of paper appr 4 inch
So geht´s/ How to:
1. Baue eine Seite des Gitterbetts ab, an der laut Herstellerangaben das Juniorbett-Seitenteil montiert werden kann. Hier findest du insgesamt 9 Bohrlöcher an jedem Bettende: 2 innen liegende Löcher für die 2 möglichen Höhen des Lattenrostes und 7 für die verschiedenen Seitenteile. Die untersten Löcher dienen der Anbringung des Gitters und auch des Juniobett-Seitenteils.
1. Remove one side of the crib, the one on which, according to the manufacturer the child´s bed side panel can be mounted. You will find 9 drill holes on each end of the bed : 2 for the 2 ways your slatted frame can be used and 7 for the different side panels you could use. The lowest holes look similar to the ones in the picture and are used for both: one side of the crib and the panel for the child´s bed.
2. Lege das Papier auf die besagten unteren Löcher und steche vorsichtig mit dem Stift in die Löcher (auch in das für den Lattenrost), das wird die Schablone für die neuen Bohrlöcher. Lege dann die Schablone auf dem Loch für die obere Lattenrostposition (meist ein einzelnes Loch auf halber Höhe) an, achte auf exakte Ausrichtung (evtl Lineal/Wasserwaage zu Hilfe nehmen) und zeichne die übrigen 4 Löcher für das Seitenteil nach. wiederhole das Nachzeichnen auch am anderen Ende des Bettes. Prüfe dabei vorher, ob die Schablone auch mit den dortigen untern Löchern übereinstimmt. wenn nicht, musst du eine weitere Schablone für diese Seite anfertigen.
2. Place the paper on the lowest holes and copy all of them by carefully punching your pencil through the paper. this will be your template for the new drill holes. Place the template on the drill hole for the higher frame position and, after checking for its exact postion ( using a ruler or level) copy the template by drawing the holse onto the bed. Repeat this on the bed´s other end, too, pleas check before copying the template there, if it also fits to the lower drill holes of this end. If not, you´ll need to make a 2nd template for this end.
3. Bei den nun zu bohrenden Löchern ist folgendes zu beachten: es handelt sich dabei um
2 Löcher, die komplett durch das Holz gehen und 2 Löcher für Dübel, die nicht ganz durch gehen. Markiere, welche Löcher welche sind (zu erkennen an den unteren "Originallöchern", nimm den 6mm Bohrer und stecke ihn in eines der Original Dübellöcher. Mit einem Stück Malerkrepp kannst du die exakte Tiefe, die du später bohren willst, am Bohrer markieren. Wickle es dazu einfach um den Bohrer. Dann befestige den Bohrer an der Bohrmaschine und bohre die insgesamt 4 Dübellöcher. Stoppe immer dann, wenn deine Malerkrepp Markierung das Holz berührt. Teste mit einem Dübel, ob Größe und Tiefe stimmen. Entferne dann das Krepp und bohre die restlichen 4 Löcher durch das Holz.
3. Please be aware, that you will drill 2 different types of holes: some will go through the wood (the ones for the screws) , some will not (the ones for your wooden plugs) check on the original holes which ones will hold the plugs and which are for the screws and mark your copied holes accordingly. 1st you want to drill the holes for the plugs. take your drill and put it into one of the original plug holes completely, wrap a piece of painter´s tape to mark the lentgh on your drill. Now you are prepared tp drill these 4 holes: allways stop when the painter´s tape marker on your drill touches the bed. remove the tape and drill the remaining 4 holes throught the wood.
4. Nun kann das Bett wieder zusammen gebaut werden: befestige zuerst den Lattenrost auf der höheren Postion, dann bringe das Juniorbett-Seitenteil gemäß der Bauanleitung des Herstellers an; einzige Ausnahme: du verwendest jetzt deine eigenen, höher gelegenen Löcher.
4. Now the bed can be rebuild: first place and fix the slatted frame, then screw on the sidepanel for the chid´s bed by following the manufacturers manual - with one exception: you want to use YOUR new, upper holes.
So sieht das Ergebnis dann aus.

Das hier dargestellte Bett ist "Hermelin" von IKEA und passt in der Höhe zu dem ebenfalls abgebildeten Bett "Hemnes" von IKEA, bei abweichenden Höhen von der 2. Lattenrost Postition des Bettchens und des Elternbettes ist eingrößerer Umbau erforderlich: Die Höhe des Elternbettes aud die Kopf- und Fußteile des Bettchens übertragen und entsprechende Löcher für den Lattenrost bohren, an denen dann die Schablone für das Seitenteil angelegt wird.
Um zusätzliche Sicherheit zu gewährleisten kann das Beistellbett auch mit Schrauben mit dem Elternbett verbunden werden.
Modifications:
The shown crib is "Hermelin" by IKEA and matches the hight of our bed ("Hemnes" also by IKEA) quite good. If you would end with a gap between the hight of the cribs higher frame position and the parent´s bed, you need to measure the parent´s bed hight, copy it on all 4 sides of the cribs bedhead and foot, drill 4 new holes for the frame and go on with step 2 of this how to from there.
To attach the new DIY baby bay firmly and safe to the parent´s bed you can srcrew the sidepanels of both beds together.
