Tutorial: upcycling a shelf/ Ein Regal aufhübschen

Irgendwann, ich weiß nicht einmal mehr, wann und woher, hatte ich ein kleines, altes Regal bekommen. eigentlich wollte ich es weiß lackieren, aber dann kam mir eine andere Idee: bekleben!
Dank der scheinbar unerschöpflichen Ideenquelle Pinterest hatte ich mittlerweile gelernt, wie man Mod Podge, zu gut Deutsch wohl eine Art dünner Decoupage-Kleber, günstig selbst machen kann, statt sehr teuer welchen zu kaufen. Der ist essentieller Bestandteil dieses Projektes, da ich mit Sprühkleber bisher nur mittelprächtige Erfahrungen machen konnte.  Alle anderen Materialien liegen sicher bei den Meisten daheim ungenutzt rum, bzw sind leicht zu besorgen, also, nur zu!

Long time ago, I can´t even recall exactly when or from whom, I received an old, small shelf. I wanted to paint it white in the first place but then got a better idea: stick old book pages on it. Thanks to my amazingly never ending source of inspiration Pinterest, I had learned how to make Mod Podge earlier, wich is way cheaper than buying some. Mod Podge is essential in this project, since I only have made poor experiences with spray glue. Everything else you´ll need for this little project, you´ll surely find around your home or it is easy to get. So, lets have some fun!



Material /you´ll need:

1 altes Regal /1 old shelf
1 Glas Mod Podge, ca. 250  ml/ 1 cup Mod Podge
Sprüh-Klarlack/ clear spray varnish
Schwämmchen oder Pinsel/ art sponges or bigger paint brushes
1 altes Buch /1 old book
Schraubendreher/ screw driver
Schere/ scissors

1. Schraube das Regal auseinander, Schrauben aufheben ;) Reinige die Platten gründlich, sie müssen trocken und staub-/schmutzfrei sein.

1. unscrew the shelf, keep the screws ;) Clean the parts well, they must be completly dry, dust free and clean.

2. Verteile eine großzügige Menge Mod Podge auf dem Regalteil, dazu eignet sich am besten ein Künstlerschwamm (wie oben abgebildet) ein breiter Pinsel tut´s aber auch.

2. Spread a generous amount of Mod Podge over one part of the shelf. An art sponge ( what I used) is the best choice for this task, but a big paintbrush will do the job too.

3. Beklebe die bepinselte Seite Regalteils mit vorsichtig herausgerissenen Buchseiten, eventuelle Luftblasen vorsichtig mit einem Schwamm oder einer kleinen Lackierrolle nach außen streichen. Noch einmal Mod Podge oben drauf und vollständig trocknen lassen. Das Papier sollte über das Holz hinausragen. Die Schraublöcher vorsichtig durchstechen.

3. Glue the spreaded side of the shelf with some bookpages, spread another layer of Mod Podge over it, if there are some air bubbles try to remove them with a sponge or little paint roller. Let dry completely. The paper should be a little bigger than the shelf, so that the pages lap over the edges of the shelf. Carefully push through the screw holes. 

4. (ohne Abbildung) Mod Podge auf die Kanten des Regals auftragen, das überstehende Papier vorsichtig  auf die Kanten klappen, andrücken und nochmals mit Mod Podge bestreichen, wieder trocknen lassen.

4. (not pictured) Spread some Mod Podge on the shelf´s edges, carefully fold the overlapping pages on the edges, press and seal with another layer of Mod Podge. Let dry again.

5. (ohne Abbildung) Wiederhole Schritte 2-4 auf den Unterseiten des Regalteile.

5. (not pictured) Repeat steps 2-4 for the bottom sides of each shelf part.

6. (ohne Abbildung) Zum endgültigen Versiegeln Sprüh-Klarlack nach Anweisung auf jedes Teil sprühen, trocknen lassen.

6. (not pictured) To seal the work spray clear varnish as directed on the can on each part of the shelf, again let dry completely.

7. Regal wieder zusammenschrauben.

7. Screw the shelf together again.

Abwandlungen / additional ideas:
Man kann vor dem Lackieren einige Ecken mit Schleifpapier abreiben, das ergibt einen schicken Vintage-Effekt.

You can use sand paper on some edges before varnishing the shelf. This gives a nice vintage look to the finished shelf.
