Im nun (fast) hinter uns liegenden Jahr habe ich soviel Neues probieren können, wie lang nicht mehr!
Eine meiner wichtigsten Ressourcen für neue Ideen ist Pinterest; daher gibt´s heut mal meine persönlichen 10 Lieblings-Pins für Euch. Allesamt von mir mehrfach erprobt und für hervorragend befunden; also: Nachmachen ist ausdrücklich angesagt, meine Lieben :)

This year I was able to realize so many good new ideas, that I need t share my favorites with you today.
One of my main recorces, when it comes to new things to check, is Pinterest, so here are my personal top 10 pins 2012, every single one tested and made by me several times, so check them out!

Als er noch "klein" und nicht mobil war, hatte ich bereits einmal einen extra Platz für Erik in meinem Arbeitszimmer. Damals schob ich einfach zwei Sessel zusammen, die ihm als Tagesbettchen dienten, während ich arbeitete. 

When he was a little baby I allready made some space for erik in my stodio, by putting together two small armchairs, which made a nice little day bed for him, while I was working.

Been busy/ war fleißig

Diese hoffentlich bald zukünftige Reste-Tagesdecke habe ich schon im vergangenen Winter angefangen. Sie soll kunterbunt werden und dereinst auf Eriks Bett zum Einsatz kommen. Ich häkle sie mit halben und ganzen Stäbchen immer in der Runde, allerdings hatte ich sie am Anfang nur in Reihen gehäkelt, was im Nachhinein unpraktisch war, jetzt aber irgendwie witzig aussieht, wie ich finde! Zwischenzeitlich sind noch Apfelgrün und Schwarz als breite Streifen rundherum dazu gekommen.

This - hopefully soon to be scrap-plaid I started sometime during the last winter allready. It should be very colorfull and become the new plaid for Eriks bed. I crochet with half double crochet and double crochet in rounds, although I had started crocheting in rows, what after a while doing so, I found a little uncomfy to do but now I really like how that contrast looks. Meanwhile some aple-green and black rounds were added also.

Bisher habe ich jeden Winter mühevoll meinen Garten in einem Büchlein skizziert, versucht, alle vorhandenen Pflanzen einzutragen und um sie herum die Bepflanzung des kommenden Jahres zu planen. Oft "verschwand" dabei die ein oder andere Pflanze, um mich im Frühjahr dann zu überraschen, manchmal habe ich mich auch beim Platzangebot verschätzt. Dabei kann es viel einfacher gehen: Man nehme einfach ein digitales Foto vom fraglichen Beet und ein Zeichenprogramm, in meinem Fall Photoshop.

Over the last few winters I usually tried to plan my garden using the old notebook-drawing method. Of course, the occasional plant got lost during me trying to capture all plants allready in the soil or I miscalculated the space I would have for new plants. Now I figured out that it can be much easier, simply by taking a digital photo of the bed you want to plan and using a graphics program for the actual planning, in my case I used Photoshop.

Tutorial: upcycling a shelf/ Ein Regal aufhübschen

Irgendwann, ich weiß nicht einmal mehr, wann und woher, hatte ich ein kleines, altes Regal bekommen. eigentlich wollte ich es weiß lackieren, aber dann kam mir eine andere Idee: bekleben!
Dank der scheinbar unerschöpflichen Ideenquelle Pinterest hatte ich mittlerweile gelernt, wie man Mod Podge, zu gut Deutsch wohl eine Art dünner Decoupage-Kleber, günstig selbst machen kann, statt sehr teuer welchen zu kaufen. Der ist essentieller Bestandteil dieses Projektes, da ich mit Sprühkleber bisher nur mittelprächtige Erfahrungen machen konnte.  Alle anderen Materialien liegen sicher bei den Meisten daheim ungenutzt rum, bzw sind leicht zu besorgen, also, nur zu!

Long time ago, I can´t even recall exactly when or from whom, I received an old, small shelf. I wanted to paint it white in the first place but then got a better idea: stick old book pages on it. Thanks to my amazingly never ending source of inspiration Pinterest, I had learned how to make Mod Podge earlier, wich is way cheaper than buying some. Mod Podge is essential in this project, since I only have made poor experiences with spray glue. Everything else you´ll need for this little project, you´ll surely find around your home or it is easy to get. So, lets have some fun!

Die Nächte im Juni und Anfang diesen Monats waren warm, zu warm, um Erik in einen normalen Schlafsack zu stecken. Der Ärmste schwitzte und schlief dadurch oft sehr unruhig. Also musste ein dünnerer, leichterer Schlafsack her. Aber kaufen? Nein, denn alles, was ich mir angesehen hatte, war immer noch zu dick. Also selber machen:

Ärgerlich, wenn die Lieblingsjeans nach und nach  aufscheuert und schließlich einreißt. Dann hat man 3 Optionen: 1. man versucht, den Riss zu gut es geht zu flicken, was meist nicht lang hält oder nicht gut aussieht. 2. man schmeißt das gute Stück weg. 3. man macht etwas anderes draus.
Dies hier ist ein Blog, das sich mit den Vorzügen des Selbermachens und Kreativseins befasst, obendrein auch noch das Recyceln von nicht mehr Benötigtem predigt und "aus alt mach neu" einfach nur genial findet, also halten wir es natürlich mit Option 3.

Tomorrow again there will be Halloween. But whom I´m telling this? The funny thing is, that here in Germany this hollyday becomes more and more popular each year. Thats why I´m doing this article. Here I´d like to share some inspiring links and projects (all by other people), which are done fast and easy for those of you, who decided spontaneously to attend a halloween party or who exept some little monsters tomorrow, who will probably threaten you with tricks or treats…

Baby Carrier Cover - update / Neues Projekt: Wecheslbezug für meine Babytrage -Update

So, der erste Versuch steht. Bestehend aus einem alten Kinderstoff, Batik-Leinen und der Po-Tasche einer alten Jeans des werdenden Papas. Ich weiß jetzt auch, was ich beim nächsten anders machen werde: 
- für den äußeren Stoff ein noch festeres, schwereres Material nehmen
- eine zusätzliche Verstärkung aus Vlieseline/Schaumstoff innen anbringen, denn ein häufiger Kritikpunkt an den Baby Björns ist offenbar ihr schwacher Halt
- die Verschlüsse der Kopfstütze nicht aussparen, sondern den Bezug breiterr nähen, so dass man ihn vollständig drüber ziehen kann und den Originalbezug nirgends mehr sieht.
- eine Möglichkeit finden, den unten offenen Bezug zu verschließen, ich dachte da an Bändchen oder einen Druckknopf, mal schauen

Das lass ich mir mal durch den Kopf gehen und schau, wie sich das umsetzen lässt, aber ich denke, einen schaff ich heut noch ;)

OK, the first attempt is done. I used  old children fabric, batic linen and an old jeans´ bottom pocket which formerly belonged to the father-to-be. Now I also know, what I´ll make different the next time:
- use thicker and heavier fabric for the outside
- sew in an additional stabilizer made of fleece wool or foam,  since one of the main critics about the Baby Björn seems to be his lack of stabilization.
- not leave the buttons of the headrest uncovered, sew the cover big enough to cover them as well
- find a way to close the cover on the bottom end, I thought of using a press button or ribbons, we´ll see

I will think about that and we´ll see, how I can realize the points on that list, but I´m confident, that I´ll b able to make one more today ;)

Haunted by a piggy bank and weekend plans

Of course it´s nothing special, you might think, but I´m a little proud to be honest, because my little piggy bank how to was kind of featured on Cut out+keep´s "Pick of the week":

How could anybody blame me, since I never had been honoured like this before :).

Tomorrow we will celebrate the 85th birthday of hubbys grand-aunt. So I´m busy with washing, drying and ironing the better pieces of my clothing. Meanwhile I plan my weekend activities and came up with the following plan:
1st: the polar fleece plaid for the master bedroom really needs to be finished, since hubby loves to leave the window open, even this time of the year.
2nd: It´s a shame and I really should be embarressed, but since 3 weeks or more my wallet, which I bought last august at a Dunnes store in Shannon/Ireland, is shreded and cannot be closed completely anymore. I should have sewed a new one for me long ago, but, I guess, most of you know, plans like this so often don´t work out. So again I put it on my to do list for this weekend.

The ordered wallet and pasta oil have to be delivered during the first week of December, so I have enough time left for this. The pattern is ready, I only wait for the auctioned leather to arrive here.

Let´s see, how far I´ll get with my plans...

How to - the papier-mâché piggy bank in 10 steps

Ok Folks, I promised and here we go: in this post I´ll show you how to make a papier-mâché piggy bank. Some of you might recall this from your childhood days, so, if you have improvements or better ways to do it, don´t hesitate! I wanna know!

About piggy banks:
Piggy banks or coin banks are quiet common here in Germany, I got my first one aged 4 to save money aunts and my Granny´s rummy friends sliped me from time to time, and when I became 6 we bought a new bicycle from this money (I´m quiet sure, Granny added the most, but it was the concept of learning how to save for something you cannot affort right away.) Nowerdays I had one, where I put all the change in and saved for my new Necchi.

So much for the idea of having a piggy bank, if you did not know these ones before.

Lets get started. First of all, of course, the list of things you´ll need for this project:

what youl´l need:

- ballons/aerostats (best take simple, round ones, at least 2, more depending on how many piggies you want to make)
- lots of old, shred news paper,
- wallpaper paste
- water
- egg carton
- loo paper roll (the carton roll from the inside)
- tape
- 2 sided carpet tape
- craft glue
- acrylic paint or opaque water colours
- 1 bigger paintbrush for the wallpaperpaste, some other paintbrushes for the colours
- clean flowerpots as stands
- craft knife
- scissors
- clear varnish spray


Ok, now you have collected everything you´ll need.

How To

1. read the instructions of the wallpaper paste carefully and prepare a small amount of it as per instructions. You won´t need more than 1/2 cup at once.

2. blow up at least 2 ballons to the size your piggy should have at the end (1 ballon is a backup, if the first one bursts somehow ;) )

3. brush the paste on one half of one balloon and stick newspaper snippets on the gluey parts. brush more paste over the glued snippets and put the balloon onto the flowerpot to let the paste and paper dry. Go on with the back up balloon.

4. if you don´t mind to get sticky fingers, go on with sticking snippets to the other half of each balloon.



5. let dry for at least 30 minutes, if the paper is dry again on most parts, repeat steps 2&4. Go on and put layer over layer, untill you have a good feeling about the thickness of the papier-mâché. I made 7 layers, because I wanted to make sure it won´t rip later.

This is the time consuming part of this project, of course, you can speed it up by gluing several layers at once, but then the paper can rip during the drying process. Again, I wanted to play safe here (at least it should be a birthday present and I had a timeline to meet ;) If you want to do this with your kids, maybe it´s worth to take the (honestly not that big) risk, just to keep the little ones interested and active in this.

5. after you have enough layers and a dry papier-mâché balloon, cut out 4 feet out of an egg carton. trim them to make sure, the piggy later won´t have any unballancing issues. Then decide, how long its nozzle should be and cut it from the loo paper roll. Using the craft glue stick the feet and the nozzle to the ballon, let dry and, if necessary, use the tape for more firmness.




6. to adjust the feet and nozzle prepare another small amount of wallpaper paste and newspaper snippets. stick them as described in step 2 - 4 on feet and nozzle until the edges are soft.
Using more snippets mold the nozzle more detailed and also mold the ears. To mold one ear I started with 2 sqare shaped snippets, which I glued together to the half, so that I got a triangle. This triangle I sticked to piggy´s head and tighten it with mor glued-on snippets. due to the still wet paste it is possible to mold the ear very good. Repeat the steps for the 2nd ear. If you are happy with piggy´s shape, let the little one dry completely.

7. paint the piggy as you like and let dry completely.



8. varnish the piggy with 2 or 3 layers of clear varnish spray, again let dry completely. Use varnish spray very carefully and not near children and pets, the best is to use it outside, at least keep the windows wide open!

9. using a craft knife carefully cut a slot for coins (and notes ;) ) into piggy´s neck. If you don´t want to make a noise with a bursting ballon, just stich into piggy with a pin and wait a while, the air will pass off qietly and after this cut out the slot.
The empty balloon will stay inside piggy´s belly anyway, but that´s ok.

10. the pigtail you can make out of paper, pipecleaners or a wire glued to thick fabric like I did and glue it on piggy´s bottom.


Idea: you could prepare some piggies for your kids and let them do only the painting.

Decorate you piggy bank as you like.
